AFCON UPDATES: Iheanacho sends Nigeria to the Africa Cup final with a 4-2 victory over South Africa on penalties.

Nigeria defeated South Africa 4–2 in a shootout on Wednesday to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations final after their semifinal match finished 1–1 in overtime. Kelechi Iheanacho netted the game-winning penalty.

Ronwen Williams, the South African goalie who made four saves in the team’s quarterfinal victory over Cape Verde, did not perform miracles in the penalty shootout this time around.

In order to keep the Bafana Bafana out of the championship game, Stanley Nwabali of Nigeria made two penalty saves. First, he dove to the bottom left corner to save Teboho Mokoena’s attempt, and then he stopped Evidence Makgopa’s attempt from the center of the field.

In Sunday’s final, the three-time champion Nigeria will face either the host country, Ivory Coast, or Congo. They were competing in the other semifinal later on.
