World No. 82 Maria Lourdes Carle defeated Emma Raducanu 6-2, 6-2, sending her falling out of the Madrid Open;

Emma Raducanu’s clay-court form suffered on Wednesday at the Madrid Open as the British player was eliminated from the competition following a first-round straight-sets loss to Maria Lourdes Carle, ranked 82nd in the world.

Raducanu entered the match with a strong record, having won four of her previous five games and competing brilliantly in both the Stuttgart Porsche Grand Prix and the Billie Jean King Cup for Great Britain.

On Pista Arantxa Sanchez, the former US Open champion lost 6-2 6-2 to Carle at the first hurdle after complaining that she was “feeling tired” in the lead-up to Madrid.

With the victory, Carle became the first Argentinean player to triumph against a previous Grand Slam singles champion since Serena Williams was upset in Rome three years prior by Nadia Podoroska.
